After years of anticipation, Dataland—the first museum entirely dedicated to the art of Artificial Intelligence—is ready to open. Conceived and curated by Refik Anadol Studio, a pioneer in data aesthetics and media art, Dataland is located in the cultural heart of Downtown Los Angeles, inside Frank Gehry’s The Grand LA building and right next to institutions such as the Walt Disney Concert Hall, The Broad, and MOCA.

«LA has always been a city that looks to the future in art, music, film, architecture, and much more, so opening Dataland here feels natural,” said Anadol. “Having a permanent space to develop a new paradigm of what a museum can be—merging human imagination, machine intelligence, and the most advanced technologies—is the realization of one of my biggest dreams. To do so in a building designed by one of my heroes, Frank Gehry, is almost unbelievable».

Dataland: Human Imagination Meets Machine Intelligence

Dataland is, in fact, the world’s first museum dedicated to the Art of Artificial Intelligence; its exhibition aims to introduce visitors to emerging art forms at the intersection of technology and human experience.

The inaugural exhibition, Machine Dreams: Rainforest by Refik Anadol himself, will be on view through January 27. It features immersive environments spanning all five galleries of the complex, inspired by the Amazon rainforest; the works were developed using Refik Anadol Studio’s Large Nature Model, the first open-source AI model trained on the intrinsic intelligence of nature. This approach differs from current large-scale AI language models, which are based on human intellect. “Our model aims to raise awareness of environmental issues and inspire innovative solutions by finding connections between isolated archives. Furthermore, by engaging people on multiple sensory levels, the model’s results make the abstract concept of environmental conservation tangible, encouraging a collective responsibility to act,” notes Refik Anadol.

Dataland’s Mission

The founders emphasize that Dataland is committed to promoting ethical practices in data collection and the use of artificial intelligence. The museum’s ambition is to set the global standard for the presentation, curation, and exploration of AI-driven art, establishing a new model for cultural institutions in the digital age.
