A few months after her sudden passing in August 2026, Turin is honoring Yayoi Kusama by offering the public the chance to step inside one of her Infinity Mirror Rooms. The installation, open from October 31, 2026, through February 25, 2027, at the OGR-Officine Grandi Riparazioni, is a “collateral event” of Quantum Effect, a temporary exhibition exploring the impact of quantum theory on visual culture—from cinema to pop media and, of course, contemporary art.
Why mirrors create the illusion of infinity
Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama is one of the most influential and widely recognized artists of our time. Not everyone knows that her obsession with polka dots, bright colors, and flashes of light stems from the hallucinations she experienced, which she turned into her signature style. Kusama is also known for her collaborations with major brands (most notably Louis Vuitton, for whom she designed limited-edition handbag collections in 2012 and again in 2022), and her most celebrated works include colorful pumpkins of all sizes—including the giant ones on Naoshima—and the Infinity Mirror Rooms.
Simply put, the Infinity Mirror Rooms are spaces completely lined with mirrors, featuring colorful lights and objects that create the illusion of infinite space. The reflections—including those of the visitors—multiply in every direction, evoking a sense of disorientation and vertigo. The rooms symbolize universal connection and humanity’s primal desire to be part of something greater.
The Infinity Mirror Room at OGR Torino
Through light, reflections, and repetition, the Mirror Room titled The Eternally Infinite Light of the Universe Illuminating the Quest for Truthinvites the public to engage with the themes of infinity, the perception of space, and the dissolution of boundaries between the individual and the universe. In this sense, it is akin to the retrospective organized at the OGR.
The site itself—a former train repair shop—is worth a visit in its own right. Built in the 19th century, the building covers a massive area of 20,000 square meters and features an “H”-shaped layout, consisting of two long side wings connected by a transept. A landmark of Turin’s industrial heritage, it was redeveloped beginning in 2013 and now hosts events, concerts, and art exhibitions.
How to visit
Access to Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirror Room is organized into time slots with a limited number of visitors per session, so that everyone has the time and the conditions to fully take in the experience. Tickets for the exhibition and for the Infinity Mirror Room time slot can be purchased on the website ogrtorino.it
