Highlights

Set in Tianjin’s Ninghe District, the new Library of the Civil Aviation University of China marks the heart of the campus’s first development phase. Designed by the Tongji Architectural Design Group—a leading force in China’s architectural and engineering landscape—the building was completed in May 2023.

With its 23.7-meter height and 40,000 square meters of floor space, the library is both a functional hub and a visual landmark for students, staff, and visitors alike.

At the top of the structure sits the Cloud Top—a large, column-free reading hall along the building’s central axis. Visible from across the campus, it becomes a true visual landmark. The glass walls reveal a ceiling illuminated by small cylindrical LED lights, arranged to resemble a starry sky. These were laid out using Rhino and Grasshopper software, which allowed the team to simulate a natural, random pattern.

Lighting throughout the space is carefully calibrated: 4000K LEDs with CRI90 ensure a warm, comfortable reading experience, while DMX512-controlled lights blink gently once an hour, replacing the traditional school bell with a subtle visual cue.

The project also integrates a strong sustainability approach. All luminaires are VOC-free and meet the EN 13501-1 B-s1,d0 fire safety standard. The system optimizes energy use through daylight sensors and four preset lighting modes—normal, hourly, late-night, and energy-saving. The design complies with China’s GB 50034-2013 lighting efficiency standard.
