Completed in June 2024 in Longhe Central Park, Anci District, Langfang, Hebei Province, Jinmao Langfang Longhe Central Park Club was designed by Sunlay, with architectural lighting by J+B Studios led by Hen-Chao Shih, together with Fiona Lang and Liping Deng. Developed for China Jinmao, the project adopts “horizontality and ridgelines” as its architectural language, using restrained, precise lighting techniques to reinforce the building’s structural identity while strengthening its relationship with the surrounding landscape.
The lighting concept recreates the layered contours of natural mountains by illuminating the roof according to its changing slopes, producing a subtle gradient effect. After dark, the building’s silhouette merges with its reflection on the lake to create a three-dimensional landscape described as “mountains within water”, while diffused lighting along the building and floating bridge ensures safe circulation and casts soft luminous bands across the water.
At the three “mountain ridge” entrances, light emerges from within the architecture to establish visual focal points, while low-level anti-glare bollards and silhouette lighting guide visitors from the urban environment into the park’s tranquil atmosphere.
Sustainability follows a “less but better” lighting strategy, concentrating illumination only on essential architectural elements. To comply with Dark Sky principles, the project employs high-efficiency 45W LED floodlights with 8°, 15°, and 24° narrow-beam optics, carefully positioned using photometric calculations to eliminate stray light, over-illumination, and upward light spill onto surrounding trees. Intelligent controls automatically switch lighting off from late night until dawn, reducing both energy consumption and light pollution.
