Specializing in residential and commercial spaces, VSHD Design has completed projects worldwide. It balances minimalism with elegance to craft environments of serenity, beauty, and understated luxury. The studio sees its mission as one of transformation—repurposing and redefining spaces to breathe new life into them.
One of their most recent projects is KLEÏ Spa & Hammam, a wellness retreat designed to evoke the intimacy and warmth of a natural cave. We spoke with the studio to explore the concept behind the project and the pivotal role of lighting in shaping its atmosphere.

The studio “Transforms space through the creative use of light”. What value does light have in VSHD’s projects?
«Light is what allows us to perceive and understand space. Without it, our perception would be limited. In all of our projects, lighting plays a fundamental role—it is the defining element we always seek to enhance. Whether maximizing natural light or crafting a dimly lit ambiance, light remains the driving force behind our designs».
For KLEÏ Spa & Hammam, the design is centered on the use of clay, creating an environment that feels both organic and enveloping. How did this concept come to life?
«The design of this space is deeply inspired by the essence of natural materials, particularly clay. From the earliest stages of the project, we envisioned a process akin to shaping a piece of clay with our hands—allowing the form to emerge naturally, whether amorphous, organic, or curvaceous. The concept for KLEÏ developed intuitively, as an ongoing exploration of space, embodying the idea of perfection within imperfection»

Beyond material selection, lighting also plays a fundamental role in the project. How has it been used, and what are its benefits?
«More than just a beneficial element, light is an integral part of the experience. We conceived KLEÏ as a space that fosters peace and introspection—a journey inward. To achieve this, every element had to work in harmony: the soft curvature of the walls, the raw tactility of natural materials, the balance of colors and tones, and, most importantly, the light—guiding guests seamlessly through the sensory experience».

KLEÏ Spa & Hammam features a carefully designed pathway leading to different areas and treatment rooms. How was this passageway conceived, and what role does light play?
«The corridor is the core of the project, arguably the most important space, as it serves as the transition between different zones. It was essential for us to transform this long passage into an area that naturally eases visitors into a state of tranquility. Our goal was for guests to feel an immediate sense of relaxation the moment they stepped inside, setting the tone for their entire spa experience. To amplify this effect, the corridor was deliberately designed without natural light, creating a dimly lit ambiance that encourages sensory decompression and deep relaxation»

Did you integrate smart lighting solutions to enhance the spa’s calming effect?
«While KLEÏ does not rely on a fully automated smart system, we incorporated dimmable lighting throughout to ensure optimal comfort, allowing for adjustments based on individual needs and preferences».
