Becoming a lighting designer requires both academic training and extensive hands-on experience. Although there is no official professional registry, we have already emphasized the importance of a solid educational background. In Italy, several university-level master’s programs in lighting design are available; these are selective postgraduate courses, with the most established ones offered by the Politecnico di Milano and La Sapienza University of Rome. For those seeking international experience, numerous programs are available abroad, both within Europe and beyond.

Architectural Lighting Design, KTH Stockholm

The Architectural Lighting Design program at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology takes a holistic approach to sustainability, addressing environmental, social, and economic dimensions. The course lasts one year and incorporates innovative teaching methods, including hands-on sessions and peer review. Particularly noteworthy are the “interactive” sessions—open discussions, mentoring, and workshops that combine theory and practice, including the use of mockups. Since 2010, the program has also hosted the Light Symposium, a two-day international event focused on light and health, organized in collaboration with universities in Wismar, Aalborg, and Southeast Norway.

The program is available both on campus and online (live classes via videoconference at scheduled times). Applicants must hold a degree in interior design, architecture, engineering, or theatrical lighting (candidates from related fields may also be considered if they can demonstrate sufficient aptitude and preparation). All applicants must submit a portfolio of recent work, including architecture and interior design projects, photographs, sketches, and lighting studies.

Lighting Design MFA, Parsons School of Design, New York

The Lighting Design MFA at Parsons was the first program of its kind in the world and has been training leading professionals in this rapidly evolving field for over 45 years. The interdisciplinary curriculum focuses on human experience, sustainability, and the social impact of lighting design. It explores the relationships between theory, technical application, energy efficiency, and the social and environmental dimensions of both electric and natural light. Studying in New York—the birthplace of architectural lighting design—offers access to major projects, industry events, trade shows, conferences, and internship opportunities. The program is held in person on campus and lasts two years.
