Completed in 2024, the Reimei Kobashi footbridge spans the Asashio Canal in Tokyo as part of the Kachidoki East District urban redevelopment project. Hoshino Architects developed the lighting design and product system in collaboration with Izumi Okayasu Lighting Design Office.
The bridge’s soft, arching geometry follows the flow of the canal. Its continuous white structure is visually detached from the water, maintaining a restrained, linear presence. After dark, light is projected onto the canal surface, generating layered reflections that extend its form into the surrounding environment and emphasise its three-dimensional profile.
Lighting fixtures integrated along both sides of the bridge are programmed to shift colour slowly and progressively, in response to the seasons and days of the week. By differentiating the lighting sequences between the upper and lower portions of the rippled structure, the system produces subtle variations in colour and perception while preserving overall visual coherence. The nightscape evolves gradually, favouring continuity over spectacle.
At Reimei Kobashi, lighting functions as both an infrastructural and perceptual device, contributing to the everyday experience of the surrounding neighbourhood. The project reflects the broader methodology of Hoshino Architects, founded in Tokyo in 2012 by Hiroaki Hoshino.
Working across architecture and urban design, the studio employs layering and abstraction to respond to the historical, geographical, and atmospheric conditions.
